About Our Activities

Our programme provides a unique opportunity for learners and their educators to visit a national park and learn about South Africa’s natural and cultural heritage. The  programme allows for a loads of discovery, learning and fun for kids. The programme exposes the importance of a national parks to learners. The children learn to identify, name and describe the fauna and flora. They learn about biodiversity and how to sustain it. 

The overnight camp is also an ideal opportunity to make young people aware of careers in conservation

Spider & Snake Presentation

We start off with an introduction (meet and greet), a brief explanation on the purpose of the presentation and a talk about the different species and their importance to the eco system. The following is also discussed and explained: Explanation on different types of venom and their characteristics What to do when you see a snake . Growth cycle of a snake . What to do in the event of a snake bite. How we can avoid encounters with harmful snakes Introduction to arachnids(spiders) Brief description on different types of tarantulas Importance to the eco system General questions will be taken from students through out the presentation the aim is to educate the students on the value these animals have to our eco system and the threat it poses by removing them from the wild.

Nocturnal Insects & Mammals Identification Walk​

We hunt for and have a look at the most common nocturnal insects that come out at night. We also look for the Lesser Galago(Bushbabies) with their large saucepan eyes, big ears and bushy tails.

Stories told by a renowned nature conservationist, field guide, nature activist , writer & poet .

Futululu Forest bush walk/hike

We make use of the Futululu trails accessing the wetlands, forest and grasslands to initiate environmental awareness. Witness prolific bird life and small game. The guide will introduce the students to the basics of bird, tree and small game identification, forest dynamics, alien plant control, habitat rehabilitation, flood plain dynamics etc.

Zulu Dancers @ R1500.00 per group

Either visit a cultural village or be entertained locally by Zulu dancers. The students are invited to join the dancers, often with amusing consequences.

iSIMANGALISO WETLAND PARK, WORLD HERITAGE SITE & CULTURAL TOURS INTERACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE We teach the importance of protecting and valuing our environment.

St Lucia, South Africa's first World Heritage Site (17km from Futululu Forest). Awarded as a World Heritage site in 1999 (Unesco), this small but quaint village has fast become a top tourist destination.

Cape Vidal and Mission Rocks – iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Cape Vidal falls within the St Lucia Marine Reserve and is situated north-east of St Lucia within the Isimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site. Cape Vidal has the best of both worlds with access to the eastern shores of Lake St Lucia where there is a variety of game including reedbuck, antelope, hippos, elephant, leopard, crocodiles and buffalo. Spectacular water, forest, grassland birds and the wonderful Indian Ocean shoreline with its startling array of marine animals. The marine habitat is the route used by humpback whales on their northerly migration to Mozambique to calve. Marine studies on the coastal Rocky shores - including some snorkeling in a protected bay. Our guides provide goggles to explore the deep rock pools and examines the inter-tidal zone in detail. The sandy shore and coastal forest can be included in the lesson.

Biodiversity study - Guided walk in iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Beach Activities, Hike & Clean-Up

Nature walks within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park - focus area - Ecology, Ecosystems, Biomes, Geology and Weather/Climate, Mammals and Animal behavior. View magnificent mangrove and swamp forests, grasslands, pans and big game on foot. There are several trails accessing the various eco-systems for which the area is famous. Utilize the beach for a fun filled session of games and beach clean-up.

Activities in St Lucia Town & iSimangaliso Wetland Park (own transport must be provided)

Crocodile and Hippo Boat Cruise on the St Lucia Estuary

The cruise offers good siting's of hippopotamus, crocodiles and water birds. A guide explains the importance of the 40km long lake and 20km long tidal channel as a nursery and feeding ground for birds and marine, estuarine and freshwater fish and organisms.

Crocodile Centre

Get a close up view of four different crocodile species and several types of snakes. The guide will keep the students captivated for two hours with an in-depth examination of these fascinating creatures.

Veyane Cultural Village Tour

Get an insight into the traditional Zulu culture on a Cultural Tour. The Zulu Nation is known for their rich culture. They are famous for their rhythmic dancing, especially the 'Reed Dance. Information is given about its history, current infrastructure and traditions is shared. Afterwards, students partake in the traditional dancing.

Unizulu Science Centre

UNIZULU’s internationally acclaimed Science Centre celebrated its 25 Anniversary in 2011 along with the launch of its early childhood development museum, a first for Africa. Located within the Zululand Chamber of Business Foundation (ZCBF) Community Park in Richards Bay, the Centre has received numerous accolades for promoting interest in Science, Engineering and Technology and is home to more than 130 innovative exhibits produced locally and abroad. The Centre forms part of the University’s community outreach initiative that is focused on developing inquiring minds.

Richards Bay Harbour Tour

A 1 hour harbour boat cruise for school children – telling them all about the functionality of the working harbour, and the factories surrounding and a marine mammal talk.

Cheese Farm (Between Mtubatuba & St Lucia on the R618)

•A presentation of how to make cheese. •Demonstration of milking a goat, participating in the milking process.

The school camp itinerary is jam-packed and can be tailor-made to suit the needs of any school. We recommend a 2 to 4 night stay to enjoy the full extent of the experience.
